I grew up in a small town of 500 people in a farming community in rural Idaho. My four brothers and I climbed trees, made underground forts, swam in canals, rode horses, slept under the stars, and on special occasions blew things up.
As a child and then a teenager, I used to stay up reading into the wee hours of the night. My father would come into my room and say, “Turn on your lamp, and I will turn off your overhead light so when you do decide to go to sleep, you won’t have to get out of bed.” He never told me to go to sleep. I lived in a world of imagination, dress up, and books.
I never really grew up, but sad to say the world told me I had to choose a career. I considered becoming a writer but then thought, “No one can actually make a living writing.” So I went this way and that trying to find something I was as passionate about as books. Other pursuits tried but they never came close.
So after putting writing off for many years, I finally embraced the career I love.
With writing, I still get to live in a world of imagination, dress up, and books.
